Baron is more than I could have ever asked for in an Akita. When Baron’s breeder suggested we purchase him as a “show” dog, we had no idea what that meant or what it involved. Now I am hooked.
I trained Baron in conformation until he was 2 years old. He seemed to enjoy the show ring; however, he began having stomach problems and after tests were done, it was found that he had allergies and a low thyroid. We decided that he would not be bred and Baron was neutered.
He is not shown in conformation; however, he has obtained his Companion Dog (CD) Title, his Beginner Notice (BN) Title, his Rally Novice (RN), Rally Advanced (RA), and Rally Excellent (RE) Titles (with a few legs towards his RAE title), passed the Therapy Dog International Inc (TDI) evaluation, passed the American Temperment Test Society Inc (ATTS) evaluation with an "above average" score, and passed the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. Baron has received the Versatile Akita Certificate (VA) through the Akita Club of America by accumulating the required number of points from his obedience, temperment, rally, and therapy endeavors.
It was a pleasure taking Baron to Meridian Arms Nursing Home for therapy visits. The residents looked forward to seeing Baron each week and would even ask when he would be back. He was very gentle with the residents and seemed to know which ones were leary of him and his size & he would sit or stand for those to approach him. Baron fulfilled the requirements of 50 visits at Meridian Arms and completed the TDIA certificate as well as the Therapy Dog title through the AKC. Baron is retired from therapy work due to age and health issues.
Baron is my first "performance" dog and I thank him every day for everything we have accomplished thus far. He is my "Novice A" dog and has been my heart and soul for many many years.
